Insurance Companies have large staffs including well-trained  attorneys and claim adjusters. Although these companies claim to be dedicated to resolving claims fairly, their objective is clearly to minimize payments to claimants whenever possible.

Insurance Company adjusters often seek to settle claims before claimants fully realize the extent of their injuries or economic losses.

Usually, when an insurance adjuster extends a settlement offer to an accident victim, he/she will require the claimant to sign a document called a General Release. It is important to note that signing of a General Release forever bars the accident victim from ever seeking further compensation from the person causing the injury and/or his insurance company. You should always consult with an attorney before signing any paperwork or accepting any checks from any insurance company or its agents.

Things you should do in the event of an accident

If you are seriously injured, remain where you are until medical assistance arrives.
Do nothing likely to increase your injuries.

If you are able, there is some basic information which should be gathered as quickly and completely as possible. This includes the following:

  1. Names and addresses, drivers license numbers, of other drivers involved.
  2. Names and addresses of other passengers and any witnesses.
  3. Direction of travel of each vehicle involved.
  4. Name of insurance company of each vehicle involved.
  5. Make a note of weather conditions, visibility, etc.
  6. Note damage done to all vehicles.
